The Beauty Of Art
Some things in the world are out-of this world. They are inexplicable, surreal and larger-than-life. The movie I am going to talk about is one of them. I have always loved to watch good movies. Some movies entertain us, some leave us with a lasting effect. A good movie is like a good book. If you think about it, it takes so much hard-work of so many people even to make a bad movie. Sometimes, I feel I am pretty dense when it comes to art. There are some good movies that do not get appreciated enough.
Some movie makers are so subtle that if you miss these subtle signs, you would not understand the depth of the emotions that the makers are trying to project. A good example of this would be one of the scenes from the movie "Dil Chahta Hai".
This entire scene is a work of pure art, but what one might miss is the first few moments of this scene, where there are no dialogues, noone else but Aamir. He is just sitting there quietly, not showing any physical manifestations of what's going on in his mind, he is just sitting there in deep thoughts. However, there is a piece of decoration on the table behind him. That piece of decoration is put there to show the condition of his mind. His mind is vacillating like this glass box to decide if he should make up with his buddy or still pamper his ego. Farhan is a genius.
Sometimes I wonder who is more genius, a scientist, or an artist? That's why my favorite guy is Leonardo Da Vinci. He was both.
Anyway coming back to the point, this was not the movie I was talking about. I was talking about Devdas. As much as I dislike this movie, I cannot ignore Sanjay's hunger for art. It will take me all day to critic the entire movie. I just want to talk about this one song.
I remember when I went to watch this movie in a Bhavnagar Theater with my friends. It didn't impress me at all, Instead, I left the theater feeling sad. but I distinctly remember when this song came on the screen. Ever since the movie started and Aishwarya's songs were playing, it kept me unsatisfied. I strongly felt that there was something missing, there was something very important missing, but I couldn't figure out what. And then this song started. When I heard the words- Kaahe Chhed Chhed Mohe... I figured out what was missing from the previous songs.
The previous songs were sung by this new singer Shreya Ghoshal. When I heard this song from one of my favorite Raags, in the voice of Kavitha, I realized it was Kavitha's voice that was missing from those songs. Shreya is a great singer, but she is no Kavitha. (It's needless to say- Aishwarya is no Madhuri.) The sweetness of Kavitha's voice, mixed with Birju Maharaj's Kathak, and Madhuri's beauty makes this song one of the master pieces. Each curve of Kavitha's voice, and each expression of Madhuri are so subtly marvelous. This song leaves me mesmerized every time.
Sanjay's movies make me nauseated sometimes with the overdose of art. My favorite from all his movies is Khamoshi, simply because of its sheer simplicity. But after that, I think the only movie where he used the right amount of art was HDDCS. After that, I don't know what happened. His only problem is he doesn't know when to stop, when it comes to art, but I cannot blame the guy for trying. I am glad Madhuri was young and pretty when Sanjay made this movie. I cannot imagine any other actor play this song so beautifully.
